Caption

Close-up of the African giant snails (Achatina fulica) mating. Snails are hermaphrodites, having both male and female organs, and both partners here are transferring sperm to the other. This snail is native to eastern Africa, but it has been introduced to tropical regions throughout the world, where it has become a serious pest. It is a voracious feeder, outcompeting native species, and is a vector for plant and animal diseases. Filmed in the Jama Coaque Reserve, Ecuador.
