Caption: USS Catskill. Officers on the deck and turret of the ironclad warship (monitor) USS Catskill while it was moored in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, USA, in 1865. At upper centre, seated in the turret, is the ship's commander Lieutenant Commander Edward Barrett. The USS Catskill was launched in 1862 and served in the US Civil War (1861-1865). Part of the US Navy, the ship and its crew took part in several actions and attacks against Confederate forces. After the US Civil War, the USS Catskill was decommissioned in July 1865. Recommissioned from 1876 to 1878, and again in 1898, the ship was sold for scrap in December 1901.
