Caption: Slater cotton mill. View of Slater Mill looking across the Blackstone River in Pawtucket, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA. This water-powered cotton mill, completed in 1793, was the first successful cotton-spinning factory in the USA. Various extensions and additions were made over the years, including a large addition to the northern end of the mill in the period 1869 to 1872. This photograph, dating from circa 1890, is part of the Historic American Engineering Record.
