Diazepam was first marketed as valium. It is a type of benzodiazepine, is a tranquilliser used for the short-term relief of moderate anxiety. It can also relieve symptoms of acute alcohol withdrawal and muscle spasms, and its anti-convulsant properties means it can control epilepsy. Side-effects include loss of muscle coordination (ataxia), involuntary movements of the eyes (nystagmus) and sedation. Valium may cause dependence in users, even in therapeutic doses.
