Caption: Human blastocyst, illustration. A blastocyst is a hollow ball of cells formed by repeated cell division soon after an egg has been fertilised by a sperm cell. This is the first stage of embryonic development. If it successfully implants into the wall of the uterus, the blastocyst can then develop into a foetus and placenta during pregnancy. The blastocyst implants itself in the uterine wall approximately five days after fertilisation.
