Caption: Andrew Snape (1644-1708), English farrier. Snape, farrier to King Charles II, was the author of 'The Anatomy of an Horse' (1683), in which this illustration appeared. The work is considered one of the most comprehensive and beautifully illustrated books about the horse published in Britain in the 17th century. Topics covered included equine anatomy, physiology and reproduction. The book contained 49 copperplate engravings and an appendix. In the book, Snape stated that he was a member of a dynasty of farriers to the king stretching back over two centuries. This engraving shows him aged 38 in 1682.
