Caption: Skin anatomy. Cross-section of thick skin, the type of hairless skin found on the fingertips, palms of the hands, and soles of the feet. The skin layers include an outer layer of keratinised dead skin cells (stratum corneum: light brown), below which is the epidermis (purple). Just below the epidermis, the dermis is composed mainly of connective tissue over subcutaneous fat (yellow). The dermis contains sebaceous glands, sweat glands (white, coiled), blood vessels (red and blue), and sensory nerves (yellow).
