This virus is the cause of ebola virus disease in humans and nonhuman primates. There is no cure, but around three quarters of patients can recover if provided with sufficient medical support. On the virion's membrane are glycoproteins (orange), which allow the fusion of viral and cellular membranes. The matrix, under the membrane, consists of major proteins, VP40 (yellow) and minor proteins, VP24 (red). The nucleocapsid consists of the following proteins: nucleoprotein NP (green), VP30 (blue), VP35 (dark blue) and viral polymerase (pink, on the left end of the virus). The nucleocapsid proteins surround the viral RNA (ribonucleic acid)
