Caption: Brain in tuberculosis, Light micrograph of a section through a brain affected by tuberculosis (TB). TB is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria, which enter the body via the lungs. It is usually a localised infection but may spread to other organs. Brain infection is dangerous as it may cause fatal meningitis (inflammation of the membranes around the brain). Symptoms may include fever, headache, confusion, seizures and accumulation of fluid in the brain (hydrocephalus). Treatment is with antibiotics.
