Caption: Brain after stroke. Close-up of the occipital lobe of a brain after a cerebral infarction, a form of ischaemic stroke. A stroke, or cerebrovascular accident (CVA), is the rapid loss of brain function due to a disturbance in the blood supply to the brain. An ischaemic stroke is caused by a reduction in the blood supply to an area of the brain. It may be caused by blockage or occlusion of an artery, such as a blood clot.
