Caption: Infective endocarditis. Close-up of the valves of a heart affected by inflammation of the endocardium (endocarditis) caused by infection with Streptococcus sp. bacteria. The endocardium is the innermost layer of tissue that lines the chambers of the heart. Endocarditis may be infective - caused by infection, or non-infective - from some other cause. Here, red lesions known as Osler's nodes have formed as a result of the infection.
