Caption: Blood capillary. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a cross section of a blood capillary from the pancreas. The lumen (blue) is surrounded by the capillary lining, made up of endothelial cells. The individual cells are arranged longitudinally to the axis of the capillary. The nucleus (yellow and brown) of one such endothelial cell appears as a semicircle at the bottom of the image. Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels in the body, only a few micrometres across, just large enough for the passage of red blood cells carrying oxygen to the tissues.
