Caption: Thalamus nerve cells (neurones). Light micrograph of nervous tissue from the ventral lateral nucleus of the thalamus of a human brain. Neurone cell bodies are stained mauve and axons, along which nerve impulses are transmitted, are stained blue. Neurones are responsible for passing information around the central nervous system (CNS) and from the CNS to the rest of the body. The thalamus processes sensory input and relays it to higher parts of the brain, as well as regulating consciousness, sleep and alertness. The ventral lateral nucleus is involved in learning, co-ordinating and planning movement.
