Caption: Xombie rocket craft test flight. Test flight lift-off for the Xombie space-access demonstrator from Masten Space Systems. This rocket-powered vertical-landing craft is controlled with GENIE (Guidance Embedded Navigator Integration Environment) technology from Draper Laboratory. This 80-second flight reached a height of nearly 500 metres, landing nearly 300 metres away. The intention is to use flight systems like this for explorations of Mars, the Moon and other astronomical bodies. It is part of NASA's Flight Opportunities Program. Photographed on 25 March 2013 at the Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, California, USA.
