Caption: Hippopotamus skull. Skull of a hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) showing the enlarged incisors and canine teeth used in combat. Hippopotamuses (or hippos) are large water-loving herbivores which live in and around rivers throughout southern and eastern Africa. They spend the majority of the day resting in water and grazing on water plants. At night, they may leave the water and eat fruits and sugarcane. In crowded areas, male hippos may fight with extreme vigour. Injuries and deaths are not uncommon. Hippos may reach over 5 metres in length.
