Caption: Liger cubs. Newborn liger cubs in an enclosure at a zoo. These cubs were born to a female liger called Ligritsa Zita on 16th May 2013. Ligers are a hybrid cross between a male lion (Panthera leo) and a female tiger (Panthera tigris). They only exist in captivity because the habitats of the two species do not overlap in the wild. Most are physically sterile and therefore unable to reproduce. However, some like Ligritsa Zita do produce offspring. Photographed at Novosibirsk Zoo, Novosibirsk, Russia, on 17th May 2013.
