Caption: Coleps sp. ciliate with food particles inside. Coleps sp. is the piranha or hyena of the ciliate world. Eats detritus but definitely has a penchant for bits of animals - and is not squeamish about attacking living but damaged organisms. Distinguished by having calcareous plates with pretzel-shaped patterns around the outside of the body. Microscopic contrast technique : Differential interference contrast. Magnification 600x when printed 10 centimetres wide.
