Caption: Molecular computer graphics representation of the structure of bradykinin, a polypeptide that is active in human metabolism. The kinin group of peptides (of which bradykinin is a member) are potent vasodilators & display various effects on tissues & organs including the activation of pain receptors of the skin & viscera. High concentrations of bradykinin have been detected in the nasal secretions of people with common colds, provoking symptoms of congestion & sore throats. A substance that inhibits bradykinin from binding to its receptor site & so prevents these symptoms is being developed at Nova Pharmaceuticals in the U.S.
