Caption: Computer graphics representation of a molecule of enkephalin, an opioid peptide. Enkephalin belongs to a group of peptides, the endorphins, that occur naturally in the brain & display effects which resemble those of morphine & other opiates, that is, the alteration of the perception of pain. Sites in the brain that show an affinity for exogenous opiates (drugs) also contain high concentrations of endogenous peptides that possess opiate-like properties. This image features the atomic backbone (stick-like), with spheres representing the Van der Waals surface - an impression of the effective size - of each atom.
