Caption: Skeletal muscle tissue, illustration. This muscle type is found in the arms and legs and other skeletal muscles, where it is responsible for voluntary muscle movements such as walking, talking and lifting. It is also known as striated muscle, as it consists of longitudinal bundles of myofibrils (horizontal) with transverse tubules forming striations (vertical bands shown here). The cell nuclei are yellow. For a set of artworks showing the three muscle types, see images C023/8598 to C023/8600.
