Such protein-DNA binding can enhance or suppress expression of the genetic information carried by the DNA. In this type of DNA-binding protein, an alpha helix (cylinder) and two beta sheets (arrows) are co-ordinated around a zinc ion (yellow) to form a 'zinc finger' (upper left) that binds to the DNA.
