Caption: Grigori Rasputin (1869-1916). Portrait of the Russian mystic Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin (centre) with ladies in waiting. Rasputin, born in Siberia, was a wandering mystic and healer who rose to power in Imperial Russia by gaining the confidence of the royal family by acting as healer to their son. Legends arose about the malign influence he wielded, but Rasputin became involved in the political struggles between monarchist, anti-monarchist, revolutionary and other political forces, and, in 1916, was assassinated in St Petersburg. Photographed in Russia, in 1900.
