Ludvig Nobel (1831-1888). Illustration of the Swedish industrialist Ludvig Immanuel Nobel. Nobel, with his brother Robert, operated extensive oil interests in Baku, in what is now Azerbaijan. Their company, Branobel (founded in 1876), became one of the largest oil companies in the world in the late 19th century. Innovations developed by Ludvig included one relating to oil tankers, refineries, and pipelines. His younger brother was Alfred Nobel, whose bequest in his will founded the Nobel Prizes, in part based on his share of investments in Branobel.
