Caption: Cecil Powell (1903-1969), British physicist. Powell was awarded the 1950 Nobel Prize for Physics for his photographic method of studying particle physics experiments and his work on mesons. In the 1930s, Powell started to use photographic plates to record the passage of charged particles. The tracks could be studied under a microscope and Powell used them to estimate the mass, charge and energy of the particles concerned. This work led to his discovery of the pi-meson (pion) in 1947, predicted by Yukawa in 1935. Photographed in the UK, in 1962.
