Caption: Arterial aneurysms in Marfan syndrome. Coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen of a 53-year-old patient with Marfan syndrome, showing dissecting aneurysms of the aorta and left common iliac artery. The kidneys can be seen at centre left and right. An aneurysm is a blood-filled dilation in a blood vessel caused by a weakening of the vessel wall. Marfan syndrome is a genetic disorder that damages connective tissue. Here, it has damaged the tissue of the artery wall, leading to arterial dissection - a tear in the inner wall of the artery that causes blood to flow between the layers of the wall. This forces the layers apart and results in the formation of an aneurysm.
