Caption: Light microscopy of a cross-section of the fetal spine. Centrally is the spinal cord showing butterfly-shaped grey matter and outer white matter. Membranes of the meninges surround the spinal cord. The developing vertebral column bones and ribs are at the cartilage phase of development (dark blue). Some regions (light blue) are the early sites of new bone growth called ossification centres where bone will replace the cartilage. Note gaps for joint spaces between the growing ribs and central vertebral body. Magnification x50 when narrow width printed at 10 cm.
