Caption: Embalmed body of Vladimir Lenin (1870-1924). Vladimir Lenin's (Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov) embalmed body. Lenin was a Russian communist revolutionary and politician. Along with Leon Trotsky, he played a senior role in orchestrating the October Revolution of 1917, which led to the overthrow of the Provisional Government and the establishment of the Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic (RSFSR). He was head of the RSFSR from 1917, and of the Soviet Union from 1922 until his death. After his death his body was embalmed and permanently exhibited in Lenin's Mausoleum on 27 January 1924.
