Caption: Chelyabinsk meteor fragment ice hole. Ice hole at the site of a meteorite impact in Lake Chabarkul, Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia. This event occurred at around 09:20 local time (03:20 UTC). A meteoroid weighing several thousand tons impacted the atmosphere, reaching an altitude of around 20 kilometres as a meteor before exploding in an air blast. Meteorite fragments reached the ground. Smaller 0.5 to 1 centimetre fragments (C015/1324) were found around the ice hole. Photographed on 16th February 2013.
