Caption: Quantum computer research. Researcher with a laser that is being used in experiments on quantum computing. The laser is a source of entangled photons used in quantum memory experiments. Such experiments include the use of rare earth elements, in this case a neodymium-doped crystal. Selective laser excitation in the crystal permits high accuracy operations on groups of single ions (qubits). The interaction between neighbouring ions in the host crystal allow implementation of quantum gates.
