Caption: Laser-guided bomb handler. Support worker moving a Paveway III laser-guided missile for use on a Harrier II jump jet on an aircraft carrier. Such missiles are examples of advanced smart weapons. Missiles such as these use laser targeting, which is dependent on the use of rare earth elements such as yttrium. Other rare earth elements used in missiles include neodymium and samarium. Photographed in August 2005, during work to re-supply the Italian aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi (C551).
