Caption: Eric Keightly Rideal (1890-1974), British physical chemist. Rideal worked on electrochemistry, catalysis, and surface chemistry. He was Professor of Colloid Science at Cambridge from 1920 to 1946. Rideal wrote the textbook 'An Introduction to Surface Chemistry' (1926). From 1946 to 1949, he was Fullerian Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Institution in London and gave the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures for 1947 under the title 'Chemical Reactions: How They Work'. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1930, Rideal was awarded its Davy Medal (1951) and knighted the same year. Photographed at the Royal Institution.
