Caption: Domestic solvents. Three bottles containing common domestic solvents (left to right): turpentine substitute, white spirit and methylated spirits. Turpentine was originally obtained by distilling resin from pine trees, but is now substituted with a petroleum-derived solvent with similar properties. White spirit is a similar product with slightly lighter oil fractions (typically 7-12 carbon chains). Methylated spirit, or denatured alcohol, is ethanol with additives that make it dangerous and unpleasant to drink, such as methanol, isopropyl alcohol, methyl ethyl ketone and denatonium in addition to the dye methyl violet.
