Caption: Captain Albert Stevens (1886-1949), US balloonist and aerial photographer, arriving for the launch of Explorer II. Explorer II was a high altitude balloon that set a new world altitude record of 22,066 metres on the 11 November 1935. Stevens was one of two men in the balloon's gondola. The flight carried scientific instruments to collect data on the stratosphere, ozone layer and cosmic rays, and collected microbial samples from the stratosphere.
