Caption: Eduard Strasberger (1844-1912), German botanist and plant cytologist. Strasburger is best known for his work on the process of nuclear division (mitosis) in plants. He was the first to provide an accurate description of the embryonic sac in gymnosperms (such as conifers) and angiosperms (flowering plants) along with a demonstration of double fertilisation in angiosperms. He described the basic principles of mitosis in 'Uber Zellbildung und Zelltheilung ('On Cell Formation and Cell Division', 1876).
