Caption: Scintigraphy diagnostics. Oncologist examining the results (on light box) of a scintigraphy scan on a patient's spine and pelvis. Also called a gamma scan, this diagnostic technique involves injecting a radioactive isotope (such as Technetium-99m) into the patient. This tracer material becomes concentrated in the cancerous tissues and is detected by the gamma radiation it emits. These scans are examples of planar total body scintigraphy.
