Caption: Sperm whale skin section. Light microscope view of a stained section of sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) skin. The sample came from a dead male sperm whale that was found on Henne Strand, Jutland, Denmark. The specimen measured 14 meters in length and weighed an estimated 30 tonnes. The sample shows acute skin inflammation with small microabcesses indicating infiltration of white blood cells in the epidermis. Skin surface is visible top right of image. Photographed at the National Veterinary Institute in Copenhagen.
