Caption: Spectators gather for the launch of Soviet manned high-altitude balloon Stratostat USSR-1. The balloon was filled with hydrogen and carried a gondola with three crew: commander Georgy Prokofiev, designer Konstantin Godunov and aeronaut Ernst Birnbaum. This flight broke the existing record for manned high-altitude flight, reaching an altitude of 18.5 kilometres and landing safely.
