Caption: Space dogs. Soviet researcher checking the space dogs Damka (meaning little lady ) and Kozyavka ( beauty , on right) in their space capsule. The dogs were to be sent into space aboard a Korabl Sputnik ( spaceship satellite ) on 22 December 1960. However the booster's upper rocket stage failed, forcing the flight to be abandoned. The dogs were safely recovered after their unplanned sub-orbital flight. Photographed in 1959.
