Caption: Workers behind the scenes at the MegaFaces Pavilion at Sochi Winter Olympics, Russia, in February 2014. The MegaFaces project, by British architect Asif Khan, was a three dimensional interactive kinetic sculpture commissioned by the Russian telecom operator MegaFon. Like a pin screen, the kinetic facade of the MegaFaces Pavilion could transform in three dimensions to display human faces. It created giant three-dimensional 'selfies' of visitors and people from all over Russia. The facade consisted of 11,000 telescopic cylinders, each representing a pixel. The cylinders could extend and recede, forming the shape of the faces, and LED lights at the ends of the cylinders provided colour and shading. The data used to generate the faces was gathered in 3-D photo booths inside the pavilion building and across the country.
