Caption: Georgy Prokofiev (1902-1939), Soviet high altitude balloonist. Prokofiev commanded the crew of high-altitude balloon USSR-1. On 30th September 1933 this balloon reached the stratosphere and a height of 18,514 metres, and set a world altitude record for manned flight. The crew were Prokofiev, designer Konstantin Godunov and aeronaut Ernst Birnbaum. Photographed in Russia, 30th September 1933.
