Caption: Diamant B rocket launch. Historical image showing the launch of a Diamant B rocket from Kourou, French Guiana. Diamant was the first exclusively French expendable launch system and the first satellite launcher not built by either the USA or Russia. Diamant B had a more powerful first stage than Diamant A and was used for five satellite launches between 1970 and 1973, the last two of which failed. France abandoned its national launcher program in favour of the European Ariane launcher in 1975.
