Caption: Solar power. Diagram showing the operation of a solar photovoltaic power station. This is simply a large array of solar panels, each covered with photovoltaic cells. When exposed to sunlight, these convert the energy of incoming photons into electrical voltage. The electricity is passed through an inverter to convert the direct current produced by the solar cells into alternating current used by the distribution grid. Cheap and relatively simple to construct, photovoltaic power will become more attractive when the efficiency of solar cells increases.
