Caption: Preparing the window of the "80-inch" (200 cm) liquid hydrogen bubble chamber at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island, in 1965. The window - through which several cameras viewed the chamber - was made in Germany from borosilicate crown glass & was strong enough to withstand pressures of over 5 times atmospheric. It was 200 cm long, 75 cm high, 16. 5 cm thick & weighed nearly 700 kg. It took 8 hours to grind & polish the window so that no surface roughness could cause unwanted boiling of the chamber's liquid hydrogen.
