Caption: European Space Agency research centre. Model of the ERS 1 satellite outside the European Space Technology and Research Centre (ESTEC), Netherlands. ESTEC is the European Space Agency's (ESA) main technology and development test centre. ERS (European remote sensing satellite) was the ESA's first Earth-observing satellite program using a polar orbit. ERS-1 was launched on 17th July 1991 and operated until 10th March 2000.
