Caption: Dutch physicists Paul Ehrenfest (1880-1933. left) and Johannes Kuenen (1866-1922, right), with Ehrenfest's wife, Russian-Dutch mathematician Tatyana Afanasyeva (1876-1964). Ehrenfest worked on quantum theory and was a contemporary of Einstein, who lauded him as the best teacher of physics he had ever known. He was responsible for the theory of phase transition and the Ehrenfest theorem. Kuenen discovered retrograde condensation of gases.
