Caption: Trapeziumectomy wrist operation. Surgeon performing the later stages of a trapeziumectomy, an operation to remove the trapezium bone from the wrist. The patient is a 64-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis. Here, incisions have been made and used to pull half of the thumb's tendon through from the distal (hand) end to fill the space left by the trapezium. This helps to maintain the shape of the thumb. Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by the immune system attacking the body's own tissues, causing progressive joint and cartilage destruction. Surgery is used to remove destroyed tissues.
