Caption: An illustrated midsagittal section of the brain from a medial view, depicting areas of the brain which respond to pain, particularly in men. Typical regions of the brain (bottom-top) which have demonstrated a response to painful stimuli are the periaqueductal gray, thalamus, cingulate gyrus and primary somatosensory cortex. Recent studies have shown that there is significantly more activity in the primary somatosensory cortex in men when the brain registers pain, as compared to women. The primary somatosensory cortex receives and interprets nervous stimuli related to touch, temperature, body position and pain.
