Caption: Frederick Brodie (1823-1896), British amateur astronomer and civil engineer. Brodie owned and operated a private observatory. It included a 6.4 inch Merz refractor telescope on an equatorial mount. Brodie mainly observed sun spots and star clusters. Brodie, a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, originally had an observatory in Uckfield, Sussex, which was transferred to the Isle of Wight where Brodie operated a private observatory at Fernhill, Wootton Bridge. Brodie was the uncle of British amateur astronomer and author George Frederick Chambers.
