Caption: Haemorrhagic fever virus. Illustration of virus particles (green) causing haemorrhagic fever, seen with red blood cells (green). Viral haemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) are caused by five families of RNA (ribonucleic acid) viruses. Two of these do not have spherical virus particles, while three do: the Arenaviridae, the Bunyaviridae, and the Flaviviridae. The resulting haemorrhagic fevers range from mild to severe and life-threatening.
