Caption: Mining safety survey machine. Worker answering health and safety questions using an early form of electronic survey machine. This machine is being used at the Safety in Mines Research Establishment (SMRE) in the 1970s. The SMRE, formed in 1947, was part of the UK's Health and Safety Executive. It was one of three bodies that later merged in 1975 to form what in 1995 became the Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL).
